The Death of St. Onuphrius
Church of St. Sebastian
The legend pictures this St. Onuphrius as "hairy over all of his body, with a skirt of leaves." The artist has kept the leaves but left out the hair and given the saint a well-toned body such as one might see in a Renaissance statue.
The laurel crown is often seen in images of martyrdom. Onuphrius was an ascetic, however, not a martyr.
